A flake floor is only as good as what is under it. We diamond grind the whole slab to open the surface and remove sealers, paint and contamination. Cracks, chips and expansion joints are filled with a flexible polyurea joint filler. A thick polyurea base coat goes down next and, while it is wet, the flake blend is broadcast “to rejection” — thrown until the base cannot take any more. That full coverage is what gives the floor its even colour and texture and hides the patched and uneven concrete beneath it.

Once the base cures, the loose flake is scraped and swept off and a UV-stable polyaspartic clear topcoat locks the chips in. The topcoat is what you walk on: it resists yellowing in sunny garages and can take anti-slip aggregate where the floor will often be wet. Most homes are done in a single day and ready for full use in as little as 24 hours; larger commercial floors take two to three days.

A few practical points help narrow it down. Multi-colour, mid-tone blends are the most forgiving: they hide dust, sand and dried road-salt spots between cleanings. Very dark blends look dramatic but show every white salt film from a Maine winter. Lighter blends make a basement or windowless shop feel brighter.

Maine winters mean sand, road salt and liquid de-icers dripping off vehicles for months, then freeze-thaw cycles that work on any weakness in bare concrete. Salt-laden meltwater soaking into an uncoated slab is a common cause of pitting and flaking at the surface. A sealed, non-porous flake floor keeps that water on top where you can squeegee it out, and oil, gasoline and household chemicals wipe up instead of staining.
